Italy prepares for 2026 Mediterranean Games, Nastro Rosa Tour sailing races, and European Universities Games

The Italian government has allocated €281 million for the 2026 Mediterranean Games in Taranto, with construction of a new 20,000‑seat stadium, a 2,000‑seat swimming arena and a waterfront complex. The Games, slated for 21 August–3 September, will host more than 4,000 athletes from 26 nations and are promoted as a catalyst for urban renewal and tourism.

In parallel, the Marina Militare Nastro Rosa Tour is staging offshore sailing races along Italy’s coasts. In Taranto the Guardia di Finanza crew won the offshore leg, while the Siracusa stop featured a Villaggio della Vela with youth‑orientation workshops, cultural talks, film screenings and a prize‑giving ceremony. Both stops highlighted the tour’s role in promoting maritime heritage and local economies.

Salerno is finalising preparations for the eighth European Universities Games (EUG) scheduled for 18 July–1 August 2026. Over 4,000 university athletes will compete in 13 disciplines across 30 venues in Salerno and neighbouring towns. The event will be supported by the new Unisound web radio, statements from university rector Virgilio D’Antonio and mayor Vincenzo De Luca, and a focus on fostering European cultural exchange and peace through sport.
