Taranto identified as strategic NATO hub in the Mediterranean

Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, President of the NATO Military Committee, has identified the Italian city of Taranto as a critical strategic hub within the alliance’s Mediterranean geography. Describing the city as a ‘natural bridge between Europe and the expanded Mediterranean’ and a ‘privileged observation point on the Southern Flank,’ Dragone emphasized its growing importance in maintaining regional security.

Taranto’s central role is supported by existing military infrastructure, including the Italian-led Multinational Maritime Command for the South, the transit of NATO permanent naval forces, and the NSPA Southern Operational Center. The strategic focus on the area is driven by a complex threat landscape involving conflicts in the Middle East, terrorism, hybrid threats, energy security, and the protection of critical underwater infrastructure.

Addressing broader defense needs, Dragone noted the necessity of translating political commitments into operational capabilities, citing significant requirements for new procurement, fuel infrastructure, and military support for Ukraine to ensure credible deterrence.
