Taranto initiates strategic development plans for education and industry

The city of Taranto has launched new initiatives aimed at long-term economic and academic growth. The municipal administration, led by Mayor Piero Bitetti, has signed a strategic agreement with several universities, including the University of Bari ‘Aldo Moro’, the University of Salento, the Polytechnic of Bari, and the Libera Università ‘Maria Santissima Assunta’. This partnership aims to establish an institutional working group to define a comprehensive academic offering for the city by the end of the year, focusing on autonomous project design and specialized training in fields such as healthcare.

To support students, the city has also allocated 100,000 euros from the social regeneration plan for the Taranto crisis area to address immediate student needs.

Simultaneously, the association AIGI Taranto has called for a development strategy that integrates the city’s industrial heritage with new economic opportunities. While supporting calls for economic diversification in response to the steel industry crisis, AIGI emphasizes that any transition must preserve existing technical expertise, local professional skills, and industrial competencies to ensure stable employment and regional growth over the next decade.
