Initially, Caressa reported that the Bloodhound died after ingesting meat bites filled with nails that had been thrown over the training center's fence in Talsano. This claim sparked widespread national mourning and prompted Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to condemn the alleged act as ‘vile and unacceptable’.

However, investigators have challenged this version of events. A veterinary autopsy conducted by Orlando Paciello found no evidence that the dog died from ingesting nails. Furthermore, prosecutors allege that Caressa manipulated photographic evidence to make it appear as though the meat bites were scattered near the dog's body. Witness testimony from another trainer also contradicted the initial scene description, stating no such items were visible early in the morning.
