Taranto to plant 300 trees to offset BRT infrastructure works
The city of Taranto has announced a plan to plant approximately 300 new trees as part of a public greenery initiative linked to the construction of two Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines. The project aims to compensate for trees that were removed or relocated to accommodate the new transport infrastructure.
According to a recent technical meeting, the planting will include 162 trees for the red line and 135 for the blue line. While priority will be given to empty spaces along sidewalks, the new trees will not necessarily be located directly along the transit routes. Other areas, such as via Dante and new roundabouts like viale Unicef, are already slated for greenery enhancements including new cycle paths.
Mobility Councilor Giovanni Patronelli stated the goal is to combine BRT development with ecological enhancement and increased urban shading. The Environment Department will oversee the selection of tree species in accordance with local regulations and will manage technical details such as irrigation, excavation depth, and planting schedules to align with favorable seasonal windows.
