Taranto unions contest municipal social planning process

Labor unions CGIL, CISL, and UIL in Taranto are contesting the Municipality of Taranto regarding the commencement of the 2026-2028 Zone Social Plan. The three confederations claim they were excluded from the initial stages of the planning process.

The unions highlighted a formal communication received on September 1, which labeled the process as a “renewal of invitation.” However, the representatives—Giovanni D’Arcangelo (CGIL), Antonio Baldassarre (CISL), and Gennaro Oliva (UIL)—assert that no prior formal communications or invitations had been received via certified email (PEC).

Furthermore, the unions expressed concern that the work began on the same day the notification was sent, effectively bypassing their participation. They also noted that they learned of the process through social media posts from the Councilor for Social Services rather than through official channels. While the unions support involving the Third Sector and local associations, they maintain that social policy programming must include major social and labor representatives to ensure transparency and plurality.
