Tarantula migration in Austria and femicide debate in Italy

In Austria, two species of tarantula, the South Russian tarantula and the black-bellied tarantula, are beginning their seasonal migration in search of mates or winter quarters. These spiders may enter gardens, garages, and occasionally homes. The Naturschutzbund has stated that there is no danger to humans and advises that anyone finding a tarantula indoors should carefully catch and release it outside.

In Italy, a violent murder of a 45-year-old woman by her ex-partner near Florence has sparked political debate regarding violence against women. Following an appeal from the victim's father for stronger collective measures, Prime Minister Meloni acknowledged that existing protections are insufficient. Data from the Italian Ministry of the Interior indicates that 34 women were victims of such violence in the first half of 2026.
