Tarapacá authorities urge farmers to adopt agricultural insurance

Agricultural authorities in Tarapacá, Chile, are urging farmers and ranchers to secure agricultural insurance to mitigate risks from climate change and the El Niño phenomenon. The call comes following warnings of rain, electrical storms, and frost, particularly in the Tamarugal province.

Through the Agroseguros program, the state provides subsidies for individual policies, covering between 40% and 69% of the total cost. For farmers registered with the Institute for Agricultural Development (INDAP), additional subsidies can increase total coverage to as much as 90% of the policy cost following an evaluation.

Regional officials, including Agriculture Seremi Fernando Chiffelle and Corfo regional director Espártago Ferrari, emphasized that these insurance mechanisms are essential for protecting investments and ensuring economic security against unpredictable weather events such as wind, frost, and animal mortality.
