Tarapacá sewage network recorded 516 obstructions in first half of 2026

Aguas del Altiplano reported 516 sewage network obstructions in the Tarapacá region during the first half of 2026. The company recorded an average of approximately 42 monthly obstructions across Iquique, Alto Hospicio, and Pampa.

Most incidents, totaling over 250, were attributed to the improper disposal of fats, oils, and solid waste such as wet wipes, diapers, and thick paper. These obstructions have caused operational and sanitary issues, including sewage overflows, street interventions, and traffic diversions. Suying Lay-Son Aguilera, the Iquique zonal manager for Aguas del Altiplano, emphasized that the system is designed exclusively for domestic sewage and urged the community to use the infrastructure responsibly to prevent further emergencies.
