Tarauacá child attacked by ocelot in indigenous village
A child was injured after being attacked by an ocelot in Amparo village, located in the rural area of Tarauacá, Acre. The incident occurred on a Tuesday night while the child was preparing to bathe with her parents near the Gregório River.
The child's father intervened by holding the animal by the neck to contain it while calling for assistance. Community members eventually used machetes to kill the ocelot to prevent further attacks. The child sustained a wound to the thigh and was reported to be in stable condition before being transported to the urban area of Tarauacá for medical evaluation.
Experts note that while ocelots are native to the Amazon and rarely attack humans, encounters are increasing due to habitat fragmentation and recent fires in the Alto Juruá region. Authorities recommend contacting environmental agencies like Ibama for safe wildlife management rather than resorting to killing the animals.
