Tarauacá fault hypothesis proposed by Acre researchers
Researchers from the Federal University of Acre (Ufac) have proposed the existence of a major geological structure, tentatively named the Tarauacá fault, following a concentration of seismic activity in Tarauacá, Brazil. The study analyzed earthquake records dating back to the 1950s using data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) to map high-risk earthquake regions.
The proposed fault may be linked to the division of the Acre territory into two tectonic units: the Juruá Plate and the Purus Plate. Researchers noted that the seismic activity in the state is also influenced by the broader geological context of the Andes, where the Nazca Plate subducts beneath the South American Plate. When these plates collide, the released energy can manifest in areas of tectonic weakness.
While the existence of the Tarauacá fault is currently a scientific hypothesis, researchers emphasized that more in-depth geophysical studies are required to confirm the structure and fully understand its relationship with the recorded tremors.
