Tarek Rahman addresses Bangladesh gas and electricity shortages

Prime Minister Tarek Rahman has expressed regret over the ongoing gas and electricity shortages causing hardship for citizens in Bangladesh. He expressed optimism that the situation would improve within the next few days as the government implements various measures to resolve the crisis.

To address energy needs, the government is engaging in discussions with China and Malaysia and has initiated plans to construct a third LNG terminal, though he noted that such infrastructure requires time to complete. He attributed the current energy crisis to decisions made during previous administrations, claiming the interim government had previously halted LNG terminal construction.

Responding to opposition protests regarding the energy crisis, the Prime Minister criticized what he termed “reckless” political activities and street chaos. He urged political parties to present effective, realistic plans to the government or within Parliament rather than causing public disorder. He stated that the government is prioritizing accountability and is open to constructive proposals that could resolve the crisis within the next three to six months.
