Target Leads AI Overhaul as Retailers Turn to Artificial Intelligence for Cost Savings

Target Corp. is redesigning its technology and data architecture to operate in an "AI‑first" environment. Executives said the new stack will let AI agents access richer contextual data, enabling faster product development—compressing apparel design cycles from roughly 42 weeks to a few weeks—and powering personalization, inventory management and store operations.

A Boston Consulting Group and Inverto study highlights that retailers are increasingly adopting AI to curb rising costs. The report notes that AI tools can automate procurement analytics, track raw‑material price fluctuations and generate marketing assets, delivering several percentage points of cost reduction and speeding up content creation. Together, these initiatives illustrate a broader shift toward AI‑driven efficiency across the retail sector.
