US-Canada trade dispute threatens toilet paper prices

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) has issued a warning to consumers to avoid panic buying of toilet paper following an escalating trade dispute between the United States and Canada.

In response to US punitive tariffs, Canada has announced retaliatory duties on a wide range of products effective September 8. These include duties of 25% to 50% on paper products used in toilet paper manufacturing. The AF&PA stated that these countermeasures increase uncertainty and costs for manufacturers, workers, and communities on both sides of the border, potentially disrupting cross-border supply chains.

Industry representatives emphasized that US hygiene paper supply chains are designed for efficiency and predictability. They warned that sudden spikes in demand from panic buying could unnecessarily strain a system built to meet normal household needs.
