Tarija and Cochabamba face multiple simultaneous fires
Multiple simultaneous fires have struck the city of Tarija and the surrounding region in Bolivia, prompting emergency responses from firefighters, police, and volunteers. In Tarija, significant blazes were reported in several neighborhoods, including Germán Busch, El Manantial, El Cadillar, Tabladita II, San Antonio, and Tablada Grande. One major fire affected the facilities of the Programa Ejecutivo de Rehabilitación de Tierras (PERTT) and the ABT, destroying a warehouse of confiscated wood.
High temperatures and strong winds hindered containment efforts and accelerated the spread of the flames. In the Manantial neighborhood, the home of a volunteer firefighter was destroyed. Tarija's Mayor, Johnny Torres, and Governor María René Soruco have called for investigations into the causes of the fires, with the Governor formally filing a complaint with the Prosecutor's Office to identify those responsible.
In the Cochabamba department, authorities are evaluating a red alert following forest fires in Mizque that have affected approximately 2,500 hectares. The situation in Mizque has been complicated by rugged terrain and the death of an elderly man who was reportedly attempting to fight the flames. Emergency units continue to monitor various active fronts across the region.
