Tarija Governor criticizes central government over resource allocation
Tarija Governor María René Soruco has criticized the Bolivian central government for what she describes as a centralist approach to national development. Soruco specifically rejected a proposal to grant the department only 1% in co-participation funds, arguing that the region requires large-scale structural projects rather than minor works like small sheds or pavilions.
Soruco emphasized that the country's system of autonomies is non-negotiable and that regional development should not depend on the political will of national authorities. She called for better coordination and urged the Executive to address the needs of all departments regardless of political affiliation or geographic origin.
Additionally, the Governor raised concerns regarding the exploration of the Domo Oso-X3 well near the Tariquía National Reserve of Flora and Fauna. While the central government maintains the well is outside the protected area, Soruco warned that successful exploration nearby could create pressure to enter the reserve. She noted that the regional government is developing a departmental plan to protect Tariquía, citing concerns over previous inadequate technical reports and prior consultation processes.
