Tarija wine industry faces international praise and local disputes
Bolivian wine production is receiving international attention alongside local industry tensions. The New York Times highlighted the high quality of Bolivian wines, noting that Único de Campos de Solana placed second in a blind tasting against a premium French Tannat, despite being sold at a fraction of the price. The report praised the Cintis Valley as the spiritual home of small-scale traditional production, featuring vineyards up to 250 years old.
In Tarija, however, local producers in Uriondo have expressed dissatisfaction with the regional government. The Uriondo Grape, Wine, and Singani Chain criticized the Tarija Government for attempting to establish a departmental wine chain without including their representatives. Organization president José Sánchez stated that while the government uses the name of the producers in its institutional discourse, the actual producers from Uriondo—a historically significant wine-producing zone—were not invited to participate in the formation of this new structure.
