Tarik Muharemović discusses World Cup controversy and Leeds United move

Bosnia and Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemović has reflected on a controversial World Cup incident involving United States forward Folarin Balogun. During the round-of-32 match between the US and Bosnia and Herzegovina, Balogun received a red card following a tackle on Muharemović. The decision initially threatened to suspend Balogun for the subsequent match against Belgium.

The situation escalated when US President Donald Trump contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino to request a review of the decision. Following this intervention, a disciplinary committee suspended Balogun’s ban, a move described as highly unusual. Muharemović noted that while the incident brought him intense media attention, he believes the tackle was unintentional and expressed relief at avoiding injury.

Following the World Cup, Muharemović completed a €40 million transfer from Italian club Sassuolo to Leeds United. He joins the Premier League side as one of their most expensive signings to date, intended to bolster their defense as a 193cm left-sided centre-back.
