Bangladesh ties PM Tarique Rahman's India visit to Sheikh Hasina's extradition

Bangladesh has stated that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's proposed visit to India is contingent upon the creation of a “conducive environment,” specifically linked to the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and other fugitives.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Shahidul Karim noted that diplomatic discussions regarding a potential bilateral visit have been strained following a press interaction by Sheikh Hasina in New Delhi on August 5. Hasina, who has been living in India since her ouster in 2024, was convicted by Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal for crimes against humanity.

In addition to Hasina's extradition, Dhaka has requested that India hand over suspects accused of killing Sharif Osman Hadi under a bilateral extradition treaty. India has responded that the extradition requests are currently “under examination.”

While diplomatic sources suggest the visit could occur between August 20 and August 25, no official dates have been finalized. The Indian government has clarified that it did not organize or endorse Hasina's recent media appearance, noting it was conducted by a private entity.
