Tarquinia implements monitoring plan for Lido pine trees
The municipality of Tarquinia has launched a monitoring and intervention plan for the pine trees at Tarquinia Lido to prevent further collapses. Many of these trees are over 70 years old and face stability risks due to their urban environment.
Mayor Francesco Sposetti stated that the administration will not engage in indiscriminate tree removal. Instead, a forestry expert has been conducting periodic inspections since April to identify specific critical areas. The strategy focuses on technical evaluations to determine which trees can be safely preserved and which must be replaced.
The need for these measures follows a recent incident in Viale dei Tritoni, where a tree fell despite a lack of wind. Initial assessments suggest the collapse may have been caused by a deteriorated main root located within a private garden. Other contributing factors identified include historical pruning methods that raised the plants' center of gravity, potential root damage from excavations, climate change, and phytosanitary issues such as the turtle scale insect.
