Tarragona beach drowning of three minors spurs safety measures
Three minors died after a strong sea current swept them from the Arrabassada beach area into a rocky zone near the Fortí de la Reina in Tarragona, Spain. Local authorities had placed signs prohibiting jumping from the rocks, and youths have been observed climbing and leaping from the cliffs for years.
The president of the victims' sports club, Pablo Pedro González, told reporters that the children were "swimming when the current carried them to the rocks" and denied they had jumped voluntarily. Rescue services took more than half an hour to retrieve the children. Two of the bodies will be repatriated to Morocco, while the third will be buried in Tarragona.
The city council announced it will study education programmes for young people and consider adding more warning signs to prevent similar accidents.
