Tarragona City Council votes on Bank of Spain building transfer
The Tarragona City Council is facing a decisive vote regarding the transfer of the former Bank of Spain building to the Spanish central government. The proposal aims to transform the 3,000-square-meter property into a Parador hotel, a project involving a 20-million-euro state investment to create a facility with 59 rooms.
The project faces political opposition that could stall the initiative. While the ruling PSC government seeks to move forward, opposition groups including ERC, PP, and ECP have rejected the proposal. Specifically, ERC has called for the administration to negotiate ‘an equivalent compensation’ rather than ‘giving away’ the property, citing the high cost the city paid to acquire the building from the state in 2010.
Additionally, the Junts per Catalunya group has indicated it will abstain from the vote. This decision follows requests for more technical and legal documentation regarding the project's viability. Without the support of Junts, the proposal may fail to reach the absolute majority of 14 votes required from the 27 council members.
