Tarragona faces decline in traditional commerce

Traditional commerce in Tarragona is facing a significant decline, particularly in the historic Part Alta district. A recent municipal study reveals that approximately 20% of commercial premises in central areas, including the surroundings of the Central Market and the Part Alta, are currently inactive.

The closure of long-standing establishments, such as the historic Peixateria Amparo, highlights the impact of tourism pressure and a diminishing local resident population. Business owners have noted that traditional shops are increasingly being surrounded and replaced by bars and restaurants.

In response to these findings, the Tarragona City Council is developing a new Strategic Commerce Plan. The initiative aims to revitalize commercial activity through urban improvements and proactive measures to address vacant spaces, though local officials emphasize that recovery requires both administrative action and entrepreneurial initiative.
