Tarragona hosts major displays of Catalan human towers

The Catalan tradition of castells, or human towers, continues to showcase significant technical achievements and cultural importance in the Tarragona region. These structures, which can reach up to ten levels high, are an amateur activity rooted in over 200 years of history and were added to UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2010.

Recent performances in Tarragona have highlighted the skill of various groups. La Jove de Tarragona successfully completed high-level structures, including two 'gamma extra' towers. Other groups, such as Xiquets de Tarragona, Sant Pere i Sant Pau, and Xiquets del Serrallo, also performed notable feats during local festivities, demonstrating the continued evolution and community engagement of the practice.

Major competitions, such as the prestigious event held at the Tarraco Arena, serve as central gatherings for the region's top 'colles castelleres'. The tradition emphasizes values of teamwork, solidarity, and social community, involving participants of various ages and backgrounds.
