Tarragona officials seek investigation into fatal market accident

The municipal company Mercats de Tarragona has called on the Tarragona City Council to launch an internal investigation following a fatal workplace accident at the Mercat Central. The incident occurred on September 15 while two workers from a subcontracted company were performing maintenance on a septic tank related to a pumping system failure.

The accident resulted in the death of one worker and left a second maintenance operator in critical condition. During an extraordinary session of the Board of Directors, all available information regarding the event and subsequent actions was shared with board members.

Montse Adan, president of Mercats de Tarragona, emphasized that the priority is to act with “maximum transparency and rigor” to ensure the circumstances are understood with precision and objectivity. This internal inquiry will be conducted alongside any investigations carried out by competent official authorities.
