Explosions in Catalonia leave multiple people injured

Two separate explosions in Catalonia, Spain, have resulted in multiple injuries.

In Cerdanyola del Vallès, an explosion occurred on Tuesday afternoon at a commercial premises, reportedly a jewelry store, on Sant Antoni Street. The blast caused structural damage, including the collapse of a ground-floor ceiling into a basement. Three people were injured, with two in serious condition: a man transported to Hospital Vall d'Hebron and a woman taken to Parc Taulí Hospital. Emergency services, including the Collapsed Structures Group (GREC) and canine search units, were deployed to the scene. The PROCICAT emergency plan was placed on pre-alert.

In Tarragona, a chemical explosion occurred Monday morning at the Faculty of Chemistry of the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV). The incident happened during a laboratory procedure involving the transfer of nitric acid. Three people sustained injuries, including two in serious condition who were treated for burns and taken to Hospital Joan XXIII. While the explosion caused localized damage within a laboratory fume hood, authorities reported no major structural damage to the university building. Emergency teams focused on decontamination and securing the site.
