Tartu City Marathon emphasizes physical and mental well-being
The upcoming Tartu City Marathon on October 3 focuses on the importance of regular movement for both physical and mental health. The event features various distances, including a 10 km walking group led by Mart Einasto and actor Reimo Sagor, and a 21 km run-walk group led by Tiit Pekk and Dora Anton. The Onkoloogika community, which supports individuals affected by cancer, will participate in the 10 km distance to promote the message that "cancer fears movement!"
Concerns have been raised regarding the marathon's registration fee policy. Participants who cannot compete due to injury or illness may only receive a 50% refund, which is issued as a credit toward future Tartu Marathon events. Organizers state this is necessary to cover pre-incurred costs such as bib printing and logistics. Experts have noted that such policies, combined with the physical demands of the race, may inadvertently encourage injured runners to participate despite health risks, including cardiovascular or musculoskeletal issues.
