Tartu faces backlash over plan to house Swedish prisoners

The planned transfer of up to 600 Swedish inmates to a prison in Tartu, Estonia, has sparked significant political and public debate within the country. Local residents have expressed mixed feelings, with some voicing concerns regarding safety and the influx of inmates' families into the city.

Political opposition in Estonia has also reacted strongly. Sandra Laur of the Christian Democratic Ismaa party criticized the arrangement, while conservative and nationalist parties, including Ekre and Ismaa, have threatened to revoke the agreement if they win next year's elections.

A survey conducted in June by the Institute for Social Studies at the University of Tartu indicates that 54 percent of respondents are against or would prefer not to have Swedish inmates in Tartu. Furthermore, 48 percent of those surveyed believe the agreement should be terminated by the next government.
