Tarun Tejpal sentenced to 10 years in prison by Bombay High Court
The Bombay High Court's Goa Bench has overturned a 2021 acquittal of former Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal, convicting him of rape and sexual harassment related to a 2013 incident at a conference in Goa. The court sentenced Tejpal to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹5 lakh.
Following the verdict, Tejpal's daughter, Cara Tejpal, released a statement alleging the legal proceedings were a targeted attempt to "silence" her father due to Tehelka's investigative journalism into government corruption. She expressed continued belief in his innocence and stated she would not be deterred by public criticism.
In response to the developments, filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj announced plans to adapt the case into a feature film using a "Rashomon-style" narrative. Bhardwaj intends to present the events through multiple conflicting perspectives to explore human perception and the contrast between the initial acquittal and the subsequent conviction.
