Tarun Tejpal ordered by Supreme Court to surrender within two weeks
The Supreme Court of India has rejected a plea by former Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal seeking exemption from surrendering in connection with a 2013 rape case. A single-judge bench led by Justice Alok Aradhe directed Tejpal to surrender within two weeks and furnish a surrender certificate to the court.
Tejpal's appeal against his conviction and 10-year rigorous imprisonment sentence, handed down by the Bombay High Court, is scheduled for hearing on September 22, provided the surrender certificate is filed by that date. The High Court had previously overturned a 2021 acquittal by a trial court, finding Tejpal guilty of raping a junior colleague in a hotel elevator in Goa.
The Goa government has also approached the Supreme Court, seeking an enhancement of the sentence to life imprisonment, arguing that the current 10-year term is disproportionate to the gravity of the offense. Tejpal's legal counsel, Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, argued that the journalist, a senior citizen, had remained on bail for most of the proceedings and that the requirement to surrender before an appeal is heard should be waived.
