Tarvisio crackdown uncovers €160,000 IMU tax evasion by 70 owners

The Guardia di Finanza's fiscal audit in the tourist‑heavy area of Tarvisio examined roughly 5,000 property records and identified 70 taxpayers who had declared seasonal homes as their primary residence to obtain IMU/ILIA exemptions they were not entitled to. The investigation, which began in April 2023, cross‑checked cadastral data, household consumption records, medical registration and other personal details to spot inconsistencies, such as unusually low electricity usage. The uncovered unpaid IMU amounts to about €160,000 for the period 2020‑2024, including a single villa valued at €730,000 that alone generated a €7,700 tax shortfall. The findings have been forwarded to the Tarvisio municipal authorities, which will seek recovery of the sums; more than 30 % of the assessed taxpayers have already settled their debts. The operation highlights how false primary‑residence claims can erode local budgets that fund public services and infrastructure.
