Tashirojima cat goes viral for appearing to guide visitors
A photograph of a cat on Tashirojima, a ‘cat island’ in Miyagi Prefecture, has gained significant attention on social media. The image depicts a cat scratching its claws against a sign for ‘Neko Shrine’ and ‘Manga Island,’ a pose that observers have likened to a guide pointing the way.
Tashirojima is a remote island located approximately 17 kilometers southeast of the mouth of the Kitakami River. While the island's human population is small, with only about 40 residents, it is home to more than 150 cats. The island features Manga Island, a facility designed to promote local revitalization through manga-themed camping and lodging.
The photographer, Kazutoshi Ono, noted that the photo was taken in the early morning when cats are most active due to their crepuscular nature. The viral post has sparked renewed interest in visiting the island's unique landmarks.
