Tashkent has achieved UNESCO World Heritage status for its collection of 20th-century modernist architecture. This designation recognizes the unique style known as Tashkent Modernism, or Seismic Modernism.

The city was largely rebuilt following a catastrophic earthquake on April 26, 1966, which destroyed much of the ancient capital. Architects from across the USSR designed a utopian socialist model city that blended earthquake-resistant Soviet modernism with traditional Central Asian Islamic motifs.

The Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation (ACDF), led by Gayane Umerova, spearheaded the preservation efforts and the successful bid for the UNESCO listing. Umerova noted that the inscription integrates Uzbekistan’s recent architectural history into the global account of 20th-century heritage.
