Tashkent recognized by UNESCO for modernist architecture
Tashkent is gaining international recognition as a cultural and architectural hub in Central Asia. UNESCO has recently added the city to its World Heritage list, specifically highlighting its modernist architecture. This designation focuses on the urban landscape rebuilt following the 1966 earthquake, showcasing Soviet-era buildings that serve as a contemporary urban laboratory.
Parallel to this recognition, Uzbekistan is actively promoting its cultural ecosystem through various initiatives. The Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation (ACDF), established by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, has been instrumental in organizing events like the Bukhara Biennial. Additionally, architectural projects are underway to bolster the nation's heritage, including the adaptive reuse of industrial spaces by Studio KO for the CCA Tashkent and the development of a new National Museum designed by Tadao Ando.
