Tasman Glacier undergoes accelerated retreat in New Zealand

The Haupapa/Tasman Glacier, New Zealand’s longest glacier, is undergoing an accelerated process of retreat and mass loss due to climate change. Located in the Southern Alps within Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, the glacier extends approximately 23 kilometers from high mountain ranges down to Tasman Lake.

The expansion of Tasman Lake, which began forming in the 1970s, has significantly altered the glacier's dynamics. The lake's presence facilitates 'calving,' a process where large blocks of ice break off from the glacier and float into the water. This mechanism serves as a primary driver for ice loss in this sector of the Southern Alps.
