Tasmania advances water security and climate governance

Tasmania is advancing both its water security infrastructure and its climate governance framework. The $217.96 million Northern Midlands Irrigation Scheme has completed its final pipeline installation. Once commissioned, the network will distribute 25,500 megalitres of reliable irrigation water annually to agricultural districts including Ross, Campbell Town, and the Lower Isis Valley, with first deliveries expected in the 2026-27 season.

Simultaneously, the Tasmanian Government has responded to the fourth independent review of the Climate Change (State Action) Act 2008. Supporting all seven recommendations from the review, the government intends to strengthen climate governance, accountability, and transparency. Immediate actions include updating the Terms of Reference for the Climate Change Reference Group and increasing reporting requirements to improve oversight of the state’s climate response.
