Tasmania commences West Tamar Highway infrastructure upgrades

Infrastructure upgrades are progressing along Tasmania’s West Tamar Highway as part of a $22.5 million commitment from the Federal and Tasmanian governments. The project aims to improve safety and efficiency for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists in the state’s north.

Work has recently been completed on a new section of shared path and painted bike lanes between Freshwater Point Road and Acropolis Drive in Legana. These improvements include transitions designed to help cyclists bypass multi-lane roundabouts.

The next phase involves upgrades to the Forest Road intersection in Trevallyn. This stage will include the installation of new traffic and pedestrian signals, modifications to traffic islands and medians, a left-turn lane, a pedestrian refuge, and a bicycle lane. Higher impact construction is scheduled from early September to late October 2026, with a projected completion date of late October 2026.
