Tasmania community service providers face financial deficits

A survey by the Tasmanian Council of Social Service (TasCOSS) indicates that 53 per cent of community organisations in Tasmania expect to operate at a financial deficit this year. The sector is facing significant pressure from rising operational costs, including fuel (reported by 94 per cent of organisations), administrative expenses (93 per cent), and wage bills (92 per cent).

Due to these financial strains, 60 per cent of surveyed providers have been forced to turn people away. To mitigate these challenges, some organisations are altering their business models. Loaves and Fishes, a primary food relief provider, has utilized cash reserves and transitioned toward commercial enterprises and social enterprise contracts to maintain core operations. Additionally, Loaves and Fishes has entered a strategic partnership with OzHarvest to manage portions of front-line distribution in response to rising fuel costs.
