Tasmania JackJumpers defeat South East Melbourne Phoenix amid rule controversy

The Tasmania JackJumpers secured a 96-91 comeback victory against the South East Melbourne Phoenix in their NBL season opener, but the win was overshadowed by controversy regarding a new rule.

Late in the fourth quarter, the Phoenix were awarded two free throws and possession following a ‘disruptive foul’ by Nick Marshall on D’Shawn Schwartz. However, Skylar Mays attempted the free throws instead of Schwartz. Under new FIBA rules introduced for the NBL27 season, the incorrect player attempting a free throw results in the shots being cancelled and possession being awarded to the opposition.

NBL Head of Referees Scott Butler explained that because Mays went to the line independently without official instruction, rule 45.4.3 applied, making the outcome irreversible. The JackJumpers subsequently regained possession and scored to extend their lead.

David Johnson led Tasmania with 26 points, six rebounds, and six assists, while Taran Armstrong contributed 19 points in his return to the league. South East Melbourne coach Josh King described the ruling as “very confusing.”
