Tasmania launches new women's professional sports franchises

Tasmania is preparing for the launch of two major professional sports franchises in women's basketball and Australian rules football.

In the WNBL, the Tasmania Jewels have secured Australian Opals point guard Steph Reid as their first marquee signing. Reid expressed that leading the expansion franchise and establishing its culture is a significant opportunity. The Jewels are scheduled to play their first contest against the Adelaide Lightning at the Townsville Tip-Off on September 18, 2026.

In the AFLW, the Tasmania Devils are working to build their inaugural roster. Established players Sarah Rowe and Jordyn Allen noted that the chance to shape a new program from the ground up is a major draw for experienced athletes. Analysts suggest that recruiting a high-profile star, such as Monique Conti, could create a domino effect to attract further quality talent to the new club.
