Tasmania Midland Highway final upgrade stage cleared for construction

The final stage of the $605 million Midland Highway Action Plan in Tasmania has received environmental approval, clearing the way for construction on the remaining 10-kilometre section between Campbell Town North and Conara.

This final phase is part of a broader effort to upgrade the 181-kilometre highway, which serves as the state’s primary north-south corridor connecting Hobart and Launceston. The project is vital for local traffic, tourism, and freight operations. Planned improvements for this section include road widening, sealed shoulders, upgraded junctions, overtaking lanes in both directions, and the installation of flexible safety barriers to mitigate head-on and loss-of-control crashes.

A construction contract is expected to be awarded in the coming weeks. Work is scheduled to commence in late 2026 and is projected to continue until late 2028. Once completed, the upgrades aim to ensure a consistent three-star safety rating under the Australian Road Assessment Program for the entire highway.
