Tasmanian firefighter training postponed amid pay dispute

A vertical rescue training course for Tasmanian firefighters scheduled to start next week has been postponed. Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Jeremy Smith said the decision stems from a change in the agreed pay arrangements for block training, which would increase staffing and overtime costs.

The dispute involves the United Firefighters Union (UFU) and the Tasmanian Fire Service (TFS). UFU Tasmania Branch secretary Leigh Hills said members were "shocked" and warned that all other training courses could be cancelled for the rest of the year until a resolution is reached. Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services Felix Ellis declined to comment.

The postponement raises concerns about operational readiness, as the training is considered essential for effective emergency response.
