Tasmanian Hiker Dies After Falling 100 m on Federation Peak

A 30‑year‑old bushwalker from Victoria, who was preparing to join the police force in early 2025, died after a fall of up to 100 metres while attempting to summit Federation Peak in Tasmania’s Eastern Arthur Range. The coroner, Madeleine Wilson, reported that the man and his partner had been on a multi‑day trek of the range, a route described by the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service as one of the state’s most challenging hikes, requiring technical climbing skills and exposing walkers to steep cliffs and extreme weather.

The pair began the trek on 22 December 2024, carrying a Personal Locator Beacon that was left at camp. After several days they joined another walker and set out early on 30 December to climb Federation Peak. Difficult navigation and exposed drops forced the group to turn back, and the man fell while maneuvering around a rock. The coroner’s inquest concluded the death was accidental, highlighting the hazardous nature of the climb and the importance of proper preparation and tracking equipment.
