Tasmanian man charged in arson spree involving 11 fires

A 29-year-old man from Nile, Tasmania, has been charged in connection with a series of at least 11 deliberately lit fires occurring between August 2025 and April 2026. The charges follow an incident involving a toilet block in Perth earlier this year, where the individual was charged with arson and unlawfully setting fire to vegetation.

In addition to the initial charges, the man faces eight further fire-related charges involving incidents in Sassafras, Whitemore, Longford, Perth, and Breadalbane. Police noted that the unpredictable nature of such incidents poses a high risk to the public. Investigations into several other regional fires remain ongoing. The suspect is scheduled to appear in the Launceston magistrates court on September 24.
