Tasmanian men face sentencing for driving offences and theft
In separate legal proceedings in Tasmania, two men have faced sentencing for various offences.
Andrew John Hilfenhaus, 46, was sentenced in the Burnie Magistrates Court following a guilty plea regarding the death of footballer Brady James Hubbard. Hilfenhaus pleaded guilty to driving a motor vehicle with a passenger in a manner not designed for carrying passengers, an incident in June 2023 that resulted in Hubbard being thrown from a ute and suffering a fatal brain injury. Hilfenhaus also pleaded guilty to multiple driving offences, including driving while disqualified and driving under the influence of illicit drugs. He received a seven-month jail sentence for these matters, a fine, and a 30-month driving disqualification upon release. He still faces charges related to family violence orders.
Separately, Callum Ward Alford has been remanded in custody following a series of dishonest acts in Ulverstone. Alford pleaded guilty to burglary, stealing, and over 50 breaches of both bail and family violence orders. Police recovered 12 stolen bank cards from his possession, which were used to purchase approximately $1,000 worth of goods, including cigarettes, clothing, and food. His legal counsel noted that Alford has ceased using 'ice' and has moved away from negative influences. Sentencing for Alford is scheduled for October 20.
