Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery faces significant job cuts
The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) faces significant job cuts as part of a broader effort by the Liberal Government to reduce public sector spending and address rising debt. While the government has not confirmed the exact number of positions to be lost, union claims suggest the museum could lose approximately one-third of its 70-strong workforce.
Critics and former staff warn that the cuts will impact essential roles, including the Head of the Tasmanian Herbarium, senior curators, librarians, and scientists who provide advice on biosecurity and conservation. Concerns have been raised regarding the safety of the state collection, which consists of over one million objects, including the remains of the thylacine and items from Captain Cook’s voyages.
Community members and experts argue that the reductions will diminish the institution's ability to maintain exhibitions and preserve fragile collections. Senior Minister Bridget Archer stated that the government is focused on right-sizing the public service to ensure a sustainable budget for essential services.
