Tasmanian tiger extinction linked to Great Depression

The extinction of the Tasmanian tiger, a predatory marsupial, was finalized in 1936 following the death of the last known individual, a female named Benjamin. The animal died of exposure at the Beaumaris Zoo in Tasmania after being unable to find shelter from the frost due to closed doors and a lack of adequate care.

The death was influenced by the economic consequences of the Great Depression. Financial instability led to staff reductions at the zoo, which resulted in diminished animal care standards. The species, which featured stripes and a pouch similar to a kangaroo, became a symbol of extinction for Australian wildlife.
