Tasmania's Launceston mayor loses defamation suit as Latrobe council faces new mayoral challenger

Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood was absent when a magistrate ruled against his defamation claim against pensioner Norman, who had circulated a doctored image of a Mercedes parked in a disability bay and attached Garwood's name and contact details. The court found the email "inappropriate, unreasonable, prejudiced and malicious" but concluded any harm to Garwood was minor. Garwood had argued the post caused reputational damage, stress and anxiety, stating, "This was a curated attempt at damaging my reputation."

In a separate Tasmanian locality, former state‑level candidate James Redgrave announced his bid for the mayoralty of Latrobe. Running under an orange tie and One Nation branding, Redgrave pledged a full audit of council contracts and cited rising rates as a pressure on residents of Latrobe and Port Sorell, saying, "The rates increases are really starting to hurt people in Latrobe and Port Sorell." He seeks to replace the incumbent council with what he describes as a "positive new way" for the community.
