Tasos Bakasetas leaves Panathinaikos for APOEL

Tasos Bakasetas has officially departed Panathinaikos after a two-and-a-half-year tenure to join APOEL in Cyprus. In a social media farewell, the Greek national team captain expressed bitterness that the club failed to return to the top of the league, though he stated he is leaving with a “clear conscience” after giving his all.

During his time with Panathinaikos, Bakasetas made 100 appearances, recording 20 goals and 10 assists. He served as the team captain and was a key figure in their Greek Cup victory.

Reports regarding the transfer suggest significant behind-the-scenes involvement. It is alleged that Ivan Jovanovic encouraged the move to APOEL by suggesting it would maintain Bakasetas's standing with the Greek national team. Additionally, Panathinaikos president Giannis Alafouzos reportedly facilitated the transition by covering a substantial portion of the player's contract, with compensation figures reaching approximately 1.8 million euros.
