Tassos Isaac: Remembering the Cypriot soldier killed in 1996

The anniversary of the death of Tassos Isaac, a 18-year-old Cypriot soldier murdered in 1996, is being marked. Isaac was killed during an anti-occupation demonstration in the buffer zone near Deryneia, Famagusta.

Accounts of his military service in 1990 highlight a defiant incident where, after being harassed by occupying soldiers, Isaac entered the Turkish-controlled zone to remove and burn a Turkish flag. This act reportedly led his commander to remark that if Cyprus had thirty men like him, no Turkish soldier would dare step on the island.

The historical context also includes a 1996 anti-occupation motorcycle rally involving approximately 200 riders from 12 European countries. The rally, which traveled 25,000 kilometers from Berlin, faced significant tension and threats from Turkish forces, culminating in the tragic events of August 11.
